Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar stated at a cabinet meeting that the Armenian genocide “remains to this day a subject of an institutionalized campaign of denial and minimization, including the manipulative rewriting of history, primarily by the Turkish government.”

Context
The Armenian genocide was carried out by the authorities of the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1923. It began during World War I and occurred through the deliberate and systematic mass extermination and deportation of the Armenian population. During this time, according to historians’ estimates, over 1.5 million Armenians perished.
Over 30 countries worldwide have recognized these mass killings as the genocide of the Armenian people. Among them are Austria, Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Belgium, the Vatican, Greece, Cyprus, Lithuania, Germany, the Netherlands, Lebanon, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, the USA, Syria, and France.
Conversely, Turkey officially does not recognize the mass killings of Armenians as genocide. Ukraine has also not officially recognized the Armenian genocide due to an unwillingness to spoil relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan.
