In a statement issued on Saturday, the ministry urged citizens not to accept employment offers without first verifying their legitimacy. According to the ministry, numerous individuals are deceived into traveling abroad, only to be subsequently forced into combat roles.

“The number of Botswana citizens being misled and drawn into such schemes is increasing at an alarming rate,” the ministry’s statement indicated. It was also mentioned that the department “continues to receive desperate calls from Botswana nationals who are already on the front lines, describing the dangerous conditions they find themselves in.”

Individuals who recruited Africans for participation in the war on Russia’s behalf have been apprehended and prosecuted in countries such as Kenya and South Africa.

In February, the non-governmental organization Inpact, which manages the All Eyes On Wagner program, reported that at least 316 Africans had perished while fighting against Ukraine. A significant portion of these individuals had received minimal military training. Kenya has stated that approximately 1,000 of its citizens were recruited.
